Product Care

Scratched your beautiful carbon fibre case? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

If you had a cheap plastic case and you accidentally scratched it, then you probably would not be that bothered as you could just throw it away and buy another one. However, if you have invested in one of our premium carbon fibre cases and it unfortunately gets scratched or scuffed, then do not worry because we have found that more often than not, scratched carbon fibre can be repaired relatively easily at home. Below we have published a detailed, step-by-step guide on how to easily assess the repairability of a scratch or scuff and on how to carry out the repair process yourself.

To determine if a scratch or scuff can be fully repaired, remove your CarbonShield case from your device and then soak or submerge the case in clean, lukewarm water. If the scratch or scuff becomes invisible when wet, then fortunately this means that you should be able to completely repair the damage and restore the carbon fibre to a perfect shiny finish by following these instructions. If the scratch or scuff does not disappear completely when wet, then you may still be able to significantly reduce the visibility of the damage by following these instructions.

  1. Remove your CarbonShield case from your device and ensure that it is completely clean and dry. You can use a soft microfibre cloth to do this.

  2. For CarbonShield phone cases, use masking tape to cover the TPU chassis around the edges of the carbon fibre plate on the back of the case. If you do not have masking tape then regular sellotape or duct tape should suffice but you may need to clean off the adhesive residue afterwards.

  3. Apply a small amount of high-quality, gloss-finish automotive paint polish, suitable for use on all paint colours, directly to the damaged area on the surface of the carbon fibre. Then take a soft microfibre cloth and press it into the polish and rub it in small circular motions whilst applying gentle pressure to the surface of the carbon fibre through the microfibre cloth. You may wish to use gloves to protect your hands.

  4. Continue to polish the carbon fibre for around 5-10 minutes or until happy with results. You will likely need to re-apply more polish every couple of minutes or so as you work it into the scratch or scuff. Please note that excessive polishing can eventually wear through the clear gloss coating and directly onto to the carbon fibre underneath causing permanent damage, particularly if using a high-abrasion polish.

  5. Once happy with the results, leave the carbon fibre in a cool, dry location for around an hour or so, or as specified by the manufacturer of the particular polish that you have used.

  6. Take a clean paper towel and wipe off the excess polish from the carbon fibre and ensure that the case is clean and dry. You can then remove any masking tape that was used and then re-install your CarbonShield case onto your device.

For scratches or scuffs on the TPU chassis of a CarbonShield phone case, you can try using special plastic polish; however, this may not always work and can cause damage or discolouration if the wrong type of polish used. We recommend covering the carbon fibre with masking tape first if you are going to apply any products to the TPU chassis of your CarbonShield phone case.

IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER - PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

Please note that we recommend you follow any manufacturer specific instructions that may be included with the particular brand of polishing product you have. These may differ slightly from the instructions provided above. Please also note that results may vary depending on the specific brand and type of polish used. Furthermore, please note that not all types of polish are suitable for use on carbon fibre; however, any polish that is designed for use on all colours of standard gloss-finish car paint should be suitable for use on our carbon fibre products. Always check manufacturer specifications and instructions before using any polish on our products to avoid potential damage. Finally, please note that polishing your CarbonShield case for excessive amounts of time, particularly if using a high-abrasion polish, can eventually wear through the clear gloss finish and into the carbon fibre underneath causing permanent damage. CarbonShield UK is not responsible for any damage that may be caused by incorrect or excessive use of polish or any other products applied.
